SEASONAL WELLBEING: Living in Harmony with Winter
Winter is a season of stillness, introspection, and renewal. As the world slows down and settles into a deep slumber, we too can find ways to harmonise with the tranquility of the season. By aligning our lifestyle, what we choose to put in and on our bodies, and our self-care practices with the rhythms of winter, we can nurture our bodies and minds, fostering a sense of balance and wellbeing.
Winter invites us to slow down, conserve energy, and turn inward. It's a time to rest, reflect, and rejuvenate. This season, consider embracing the following practices to align with the natural ebb and flow of winter:
Rest and Sleep: Honour the body's natural need for rest. Create a cozy, calming bedtime routine to support restorative sleep. Nap where possible. Go slow.
Warmth and Comfort: Surround yourself with warmth, both physically and emotionally. Cozy blankets, warm baths, and gathering around the fire can provide comfort, security and warmth during the cooler months.
Mindful Movement: Engage in gentle, mindful movement such as yoga, qigong, and slow walks in nature. Taking care of physical health while promoting inner peace.
Reflection and Journaling: Winter is a perfect time for introspection. Reflect on the past year, set intentions for the coming months, and explore your inner landscape through journaling.
Natural Remedies and Botanicals for Winter
Winter's chill can bring with it various health challenges, from colds and flu to dry skin and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). Thankfully nature offers an abundance of remedies to help us stay healthy and vibrant during this season.
Oregano Oil: This is my go-to herbal remedy when it comes to supporting the immune system through the sniffles and beyond. Usually a few drops of Oregano Oil in tea daily, or a few times a day, at the first sign of feeling under the weather will ward off a cold or flu, or at least minimise the symptoms significantly.
Echinacea: Echinacea tinctures or teas can reduce the length and severity of colds when taken at the first sign of illness too.
Ginger Tea: Warm and spicy, ginger tea can improve circulation, support digestion, and ease nausea. It's also amazing for warming up from the inside out. Throughout Winter you’ll find me with bottomless mugs of Ginger Tea most days.
Chamomile and Lavender: These calming herbs can help soothe the nervous system and improve sleep quality. Enjoy them as a tea or use essential oils in a diffuser to create a calm and peaceful atmosphere.
Rosehip: Rich in vitamin C, rosehip tea can support immunity and healthy skin, helping soothe and repair the dryness that Winter can bring.
Herbal Tonics: Adaptogenic herbs like Ashwagandha and Reishi can help the body adapt to stress and improve overall resilience. Be supercharged with these herbal remedies by adding them to your daily rituals in the form of ritual beverages, tinctures, tonics or capsules.
Winter Self-Care Rituals
Nurture body, mind and spirit with seasonal self-care rituals for Winter.
Nourishing Baths: Warm baths with Epsom salts and a few drops of essential oils like lavender, frankincense and rose can soothe tired muscles and promote relaxation.
Skincare: Love your skin this season with rich, natural moisturisers like sweet almond oil, rosehip oil or a homemade herbal potion.
Stay Hydrated: Enjoy clean alkaline water in your favourite glass or water bottle, teas, soups, showers, baths to keep the body well hydrated.
Meditation and Breathwork: Practice meditation or conscious breathing exercises to reduce stress and cultivate calm.
Warm, Wholesome Meals: Focus on nourishing, warming foods like soups, stews, and roast veggies. Spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves add warmth and taste.
Bodywork: Treat yourself to bodywork therapies such as massages, acupuncture, or reflexology. These treatments can alleviate tension, improve circulation, and provide a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.
Journal PromptS for Winter Reflection
Winter is a powerful time for self-reflection and setting intentions. Use these journal prompts to guide your introspection this season:
"In what ways can I nourish my body, mind, and spirit during the winter months? What practices or habits do I want to cultivate?"
"Winter is a time for deep rest and renewal. What does rest look like for me, and how can I incorporate it into my life?"
"As I sit in the stillness of winter, I reflect on the past year. What lessons have I learned, and how have I grown? What do I want to let go of, and what seeds of intention do I want to plant for the coming year?"
Give yourself plenty of time to explore the thoughts and feelings that arise. Notice the insights that are revealed and allow them to guide you as the season unfolds.
Living in harmony with the seasons is a beautiful way to move with nature and nurture your wellbeing. Embrace the quiet, restorative energy of winter by incorporating natural remedies, gentle self-care practices, and reflective journaling into your routine. Hopefully you'll emerge from winter feeling renewed, balanced, and ready to blossom in the seasons ahead.
